The 2003-2004 Jim Buchanan Memorial Scholarship

Buchanan and Company is proud to announce the 2003-2004 recipients of the Jim Buchanan Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship was established upon Jim's death in 1993 by his family, friends and business associates. It is funded by income from a permanent endowment in the Kansas State University Foundation. That endowment has now grown to well over $100,000. Including this year's recipients, 37 scholarships have been granted, totaling $48,050. Criteria include, but are not limited to, enrollment in Agriculture at Kansas State University, graduation from a small Kansas high school, participation in 4-H, FFA and athletics, and demonstrated leadership potential.

Will Buchanan is Jim and Teresa (Perky) Buchanan’s oldest son. He is from Overland Park and graduated from Blue Valley Northwest High School. At Kansas State, he is a Junior in Mechanical Engineering, treasurer of the Lambda Chi fraternity, and serves as an ambassador for both KSU fraternities and the College of Engineering. He’s also a member of Powercat Toastmasters
Ben Buchanan is Jim and Teresa’s youngest son, and also graduated from Blue Valley Northwest where he was a member of the National Honor Society. At Kansas State, he is a freshman in Business, affiliated with the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, and claims to be KSU’s biggest sports fan
Kristin Mueller is a freshman at Kansas State, majoring in General Agriculture. She grew up on a dairy farm at Tampa, Kansas and graduated from Centre High School. During high school, she participated in sports, music, drama, forensics and Scholar’s Bowl. Leadership activities included the FFA Washington Leadership Conference, the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership program, and Lion’s Club-sponsored community service
Derek Belton is a KSU Freshman majoring in Agricultural Technology Management. He graduated from Centre High School, and comes from Tampa Kansas. He played basketball, football and golf and was a member of the National Honor Society. He was also chosen to be a member of Generation Z, a technology club whose purpose was rendering computing technology assistance to faculty. Derek’s sister, Emily, received the Buchanan scholarship in 1997.
Brandon Oleen is from Falun, KS, and graduated from Smokey Valley High School in Lindsborg. He is a repeat Buchanan scholarship recipient from last year. Brandon is a sophomore at KSU, majoring in Animal Science. He is a member of the Block and Bridle club and the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity. After graduation, Brandon would like to enter pharmaceutical sales and maintain a small herd of registered Hereford cattle.
